Seniors accessing emergency food assistance at Missoula Food Bank is the fastest growing demographic, with a 16% increase in 2012. Senior hunger is often hidden and many do not seek the help they need. According to a community survey assessing barriers to food assistance in 2012, seniors reported not using Missoula Food Bank because they feel others need it more than they do, physical mobility issues, or lack of adequate transportation.
Missoula Food Bank addresses senior hunger though a multifaceted approach and strives to develop goals and solutions to end hunger for all seniors in our community. Our current efforts include
1) Through our ROOTS program, Missoula Food Bank is able to provide a supply of commodity food staples to home bound, low-income seniors. We are currently serving approximately 400 seniors.
2) Every October, Senior Nourish Month, our annual service advocacy event, focuses on the health and well-being of local seniors.
3) Advocating for our senior clients by providing community referrals such as Meals on Wheels, SNAP, and other programs through our local senior centers. Check out our Senior Resource Guide.
