ROOTS... Recognizing Other Opportunities To Serve
Sometimes people cannot come to us for the food they need, so we've gone to them. Jointly with the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services, at Missoula Food Bank we initiated a program to provide monthly food commodities to home-bound, low income seniors. It's called Recognizing Other Opportunities to Serve, or ROOTS.
With ROOTS, seniors are provided with staples such as peanut butter, cheese, canned vegetables and fruit, meat, fruit juice, cereal or oatmeal, and dry milk. The food, which is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, arrives from Helena and is unloaded at our warehouse, where it's packed into individual boxes and delivered to homes by volunteers.
Missoula Food Bank has also partnered with the WIC program to provide one year of commodities services after a child has had his or her fifth birthday and has graduated from the WIC program.
For more information about ROOTS, contact Aaron Brock at aaron@missoulafoodbank.org, the Food Bank's program operations manager.
